We are quickly approaching the Steampunk World’s Fair which is held May 20th – 22nd in Somerset, New Jersey. Unfortunately, the Abolisher’s will be unable to attend this amazing event, but we felt that we needed to share one of the stunning posters for this year’s event.
This beautiful poster design comes from illustrator, Tom Brown. On his blog, The Moth Festival, Tom shares a few step by step posts of creating this great homage to one of the Abolishers favorite literary masters, H.P. Lovecraft. His eerie use of value and texture really sets the perfect tone for the stories of Lovecraft. Be sure to give Tom’s other work a gander while on his site, the man has some serious talent!
Here is the pencils for Tom’s poster.
As I had mentioned above, the Abolishers are unable to make this year’s Steampunk World’s Fair. I am personally VERY sad about this because one of Jasper’s most favorite bands, Murder By Death will be performing this year. Just the thought of seeing these guys at a STEAM convention sounds like a BLAST! Maybe one day, Jasper will be able to see this spectacle in person.(Let’s hope they agree to do more Steam cons for the future!) With that notion, We leave you with the fun beer-chuggin’ bar-fighting song “Brother” by Murder By Death.
Dr. Mortimer J. Torque is the founder of the group. He is a world-renowned inventor and the pre-eminent steamologist in the United States. From his secluded headquarters underneath Washington D.C., he runs a string of factories and mills that produce marvel after marvel of the Steam Age. Steamships, motorized carriages, trains, even an airship: The Centennial that serves as his personal transport to the far corners of the globe.
His latest creation is a steam-powered automated mule on wheels, dubbed Scrappington Hauley. This device was intended as a labor saving aid for man, but something is not quite right with this new invention. Sometimes it seems to act as if it has a mind of its own. In fact, the highly skeptical Dr. Torque has become convinced that a spirit of some sort has possessed his creation. Since coming to this realization, he has also noticed many strange happenings in his factories and at other sites worldwide. He has come to believe that the rising dead are harbingers of the apocalypse, due to arrive sometime after 1900.
