Rebuilding the Portable Power Packs

Torque and Peck’s portable power packs are undergoing a major overhaul and rebuild. We are adding Arduino controllers, LED lighting, sounds, and even motion!

Here’s a shot of the power packs in the process of being stripped down to their ALICE pack frames:

And here are the two Emeraldic Energy Extrapolators from the packs. The top one has been completely rebuilt, and will soon contain a powerful strip of LEDs that will pulse and flash under the control of the Arduino. The bottom one is being disassembled and will be similarly rebuilt:

Stay tuned for more updates as the equipment upgrades continue throughout the summer.

Jasper’s 2.0 Body Armor (Part 1)

Jasper’s body armor was completely re-designed and re-built earlier this year. Over the next few posts I’ll give a few details of what the changes are, and how the fabrication process went.

Here’s the original version from Dragon*Con 2009:

To start with, the base layer for the back was removed and replaced with this samurai-inspired flexible system of small wooden planks, hinges, and leather straps:

Future posts will show how the shoulder harness and canisters were re-worked.

Arduino experimentation begins!

We’ve plunged into the world of programmable microcontrollers with our first Ardunio experiment!

Shown here is an Arduino Uno (SMD version) with an Adafruit Motor Shield with a hobby servo attached.

The servo has an aluminum tube bolted to it. Using an example program (Arduino programs are called “sketches”) loaded from the Mac via USB, the Arduino can be made to move the aluminum tube back and forth. The rate of movement, delay between movements, and many other parameters can be easily controlled. What’s even better, is that when the Arduino is disconnected from the Mac, it continues to run the sketch.

Our initial plan is to integrate an Arduino into each of our power packs to control lighting, sounds, and motion (such as the needles on the gauges, for instance). Later we will retrofit them into our weapons and other gear as well.

Fantastic Postcards from 1910 Depicting the Year 2000

Urban Ghosts Media is a great online magazine that focuses on abandoned places, hidden history and alternative travel.   They recently posted a few postcards from French artist Villemard and his “Visions of the future” – 1910 postcards depicting the year 2000 . We think they are great inspiration for Steampunkers, so we felt the need to share a few with you.  Here is what they have to say about these amazing illustrations.

“In the years prior to the dawning of the new millenium, there was an intense exitement for what the year 2000 might hold for the world.  Science fiction writers have long expressed their visions of the future in their work.  H.G. Wells did so in The Time Machine, while George Orwell examined an altogether more dystopian future in Nineteen Eighty-Four.  But less well known – and every bit as inspired – are French artist Villemard’s 1910 postcards showcasing his vision of Parisian life in the year 2000.”
